National Education System
 

Education is the responsibility of the federal government. The national education Primary and secondary education are free. The admission age to the first year of primary education is six. Students sit for common public examinations at the  end of primary, lower secondary, upper secondary and sixth form levels.

 

The primary levels covers a period of six years, the lower secondary three years, followed by two years at the upper secondary and another two years at the post secondary level. Tertiary education in both academic and professional fields are  provided by universities, colleges and other public and private institutions of higher learning. Tertiary education consists of two major components :

 
1. Public (government funded) institutions of higher learning; for example,
    public universities, polytechnics and teacher training colleges.
 
2. Private (private funded) higher educational institutions; for example,
    private colleges, private universities colleges and foreign university
    branch campuses.
